What is a gourd?

A yerba mate gourd, also known simply as a mate in spanish and cuia in portuguese, is a traditional vessel used to consume yerba mate. The gourd is traditionally made from the hollowed and dried shell of a calabash or squash plant, although modern versions are made from ceramic, glass, wood, or metal.
